Childhood Anxiety
About Anxiety in Children & Teens
When children experience anxiety disorders, many problems arise from their own performance at school and other activities as well as their relationships with the ones who are closest to them. Many children who are affected by childhood anxiety are often much more stubborn or apt to raise temper tantrums seemingly from out of nowhere.
Of course, all children tend to get upset when they do not get their way, but many with childhood anxiety will simply become upset to the point of tears simply because they are afraid to go to school. “Could this be because of a bully at school?” many parent may ask, but if there is no bully in the 1st grade then what could it be? Oftentimes, regular occurrences are, again, due to childhood anxiety where the child is overwhelmed with feelings of fear, panic, and overwhelming anxiety.
When children experience symptoms of childhood anxiety, they oftentimes will become pale, shaky, short-breathed as well as showing signs of increased heart rates. All of these anxiety attack symptoms are the basic symptoms of fear in humans.
Many parents many very well see it as just that their child has a little fear and they will get over it once they get a little older. The problem with that type of thinking, especially when the child shows symptoms of childhood anxiety over and over again, is that the childhood anxiety disorder may only worsen if nothing is done about it.
The different types of childhood anxiety disorders include separation anxiety where the child will have sudden bouts with anxiety due to the loss of a parent’s presence through divorce or even school, for example. This type of childhood anxiety is normally experienced during the second or third years of the child’s life and may very well occur again later on in life due to separation from parents. If the symptoms of separation childhood anxiety persist, speaking with a psychologist or counselor may provide wonderful results from people who have years of experience dealing with such conditions.
Another type of childhood anxiety disorder would be due to a child’s social anxiety which often occurs in shyer or children with more disabilities than others. This can often come later in life during middle school or high school as social interactivity becomes a major issue in most teens’ lives. Some sources of their anxieties may be a direct result of fears of speaking in public, others teasing them, being harassed, or even the feelings of low self-esteem which may lead to more social anxiety.
It is recommended that if a child does show signs of childhood anxiety and sudden panic attacks on a more regular basis that the parents should speak with their medical professional about the possible anxiety disorder remedies, even speak with a counselor to see what can be done in regards to treating childhood anxiety disorders.
